There is an outcrop of essonite garnet here according to John Bett's website. Check the link for more information. It is a hard-rock area so safety glasses are necessary. Also check the Travel Channel's Treasure Wiki Connecticut Page. The old wiki used to say: "General description: Essonite Garnet outcropping is found on southeast side of road 1/2 mile from train station. How to get there: From the West Redding train station follow road along railroad tracks to the southwest. 1/2 mile from station look for rock outcrop on your left. There is a very small area for one car to park at the foot of the outcrop. Park here, and collect above. Safety glasses 5. Gloves Helpful notes to newcomers: The site is hard rock mining. This site is for the person willing to beak rock. I can not stress that importance of safety glasses when stone is hit with a hammer. Shards can easily put out a eye. "Check John Bett's website for this location for directions.
