VERY RARE JOSHUA TREE PETRIFIED WOOD SPECIMEN

Are you looking for ways to expand the diversity of your collection? Do you already have a good representation of specimens from the typical “classic” localities (Northern Arizona Chinle Formation, Blue Forest Green River Formation, Northern Nevada sites such as Hubbard Basin and Cherry Creek, etc, etc) but lack representation from odd ball localities? A good way to expand a growing collection of petrified wood is to look for quality specimens from hard to find or unusual localities and to look for unusual genera and species that are not at all typical. If this makes good sense to you, then look no farther than Mills Geological! We search the inventories of “diggers” and “cutters” to find the odd, the unusual, the rare, and the simply ‘not typical’ materials. That is the underpinning for this auction.

This auction is for a piece of Joshua Tree (fossil genus and species is Protoyucca shaddishii) which is one of the most rare species of petrified wood that one can collect (others include Ginkgo and Trochodendron). Joshua Tree is a monocot - it sends up only one cotyledon from the seed rather than two - and monocots are very rare in the fossil record (palm is the one exception to this rule of thumb). A lot of the Joshua Tree suffered from heart rot (typical for monocots) and the centers were all gone before petrification started. Since it is a monocot, it does not have annual growth rings. Instead, it has a primary cylinder and a secondary cylinder. But, not very much of this species has ever been found in the fossil record. This piece, up for auction, is a portion of the inner primary cylinder. It measures 1.5 x 1 inches on the polished face and it is an end cut 1 inch thick. It has a professional mirror finish polish. When you examine this specimen with 10x magnification, you can clearly see the unusual structure of the primary cylinder. This wood is Miocene in age coming out of the Virgin Valley Formation at Badger Flat, Nevada. The rich red color is one of the most desirable mineralizations of petrified Joshua Tree but it occurs very infrequently

We will be listing other specimens of unusual locality and/or species so be sure to check out our other auctions for petrified wood and plant fossils. We are specialists in plant fossils in general and petrified wood in particular. Whenever we are able to obtain top quality wood, leaves, cones, nuts, seeds, rhizomes, inflorescences, etc we offer them to our customers with as much information as possible. We strive for accuracy! If we don’t know, we don’t guess. You can purchase from Mills Geological with assurance that your specimen will come with a label that provides taxonomic diagnosis, locality information, age and stratigraphic data, plus any other relevant information that we have gleaned from our research. It adds value to have as much knowledge as possible about the components of your collection. You can learn more about Mills Geological by checking our “About Me” page. Buyer to pay $4.95 for shipping to domestic USA addresses. International bidders will pay $15 for standard shipping to them at their non-USA addresses. California buyers will be charged 8.25% State Sales Tax. Thanks for looking and good luck bidding!
