For locations near you, I suggest looking at the Extra Locations page because so far this website doesn't have much cataloged near Sacramento. Feel free to contribute anything you find from those resources to this website. I assume you want to start a collection because you like certain rocks. Sometimes it helps to figure out what you like (like finding gemstones, crystals on rocks, rocks that you can tumble, fossils, etc.). Gradually get tools as you need them or as it makes sense to invest, but at first you may find enough satisfaction in picking up surface material. Find a local rock club and go on field trips with them or join some online forums (which I don't have yet) like on the Travel Channel treasure wiki or mcrocks.com. Have fun and enjoy the outdoors!

Hello, I am just doing my initial research in to rock hounding.  My wife and I just want to get out and learn about what it out there and start a small collections.  Any advice and the best way to get started.  Equipment; locations, lessons learned etc.  ( We live in Roseville outside of Sacramento)
