Details: You can hunt for star garnets (some gem quality) for $10 here at the Emerald Creek area near Clarkia. It is run by the forest service I think and collecting is limited to a specific area. You can find more informaton on these websites: suite101.com and onethousandthingstodo.com. Update: The best website is the federal website for that national preserve. It has up to date information it looks like, and they have put a cap on the number of people who can search (170).
Directions: Check out the information at the federal website. An old website used to say: "How to get there: From St. Maries, Idaho, follow Highway 3 south 24 miles to Road 447. Proceed southwest 8 miles on Road 447 to the parking area. Permits, information, and the sluice area are a 1/2 mile hike up 281 Gulch. "
